Things I learned while fixing up the fireplace

1. Don't be scared to use tools with your caulk

2. Usually less caulk is actually more, but don't be scared to get enthusiastic either

3. Getting caulk all over the place isn't the worst thing in the world

4. Try to keep a steady hand with your caulk

5. Your baby will always wake up while you're in the middle of getting your caulk on.

****This post was brought to you by Moving - you gotta fix some shit before you can do it!

Some thoughts on birthing - 6 months later

Before we decided to have M, I wasn't convinced kids were a great idea for us.  Obviously I was willing to give it a shot, because, hey, there she is!  But I am of the "One and Done" variety of parents.  Kids are a difficult endeavor to undertake, and why the hell would you ever want to even the odds and be 2 against 2?  Huh?

But one feeling that hasn't left me over the last six months:  I want to give birth again.

right?  I know.  I'm totally insane.

Pregnancy was great for us.  Aside from no booze and no sushi, things were easy and not only tolerable but often enjoyable!  (yes, please, you can carry my 10lb bag of cat food to my car for me, even though I'm perfectly capable, I would prefer not to today.)  So that would in no way discourage me.  Having a kid has been exactly what I expected it would be, in that, holy eff, just once is enough, so don't worry, the odds of me carrying out this crazy thought are slim to none.

Why would I want to give birth again?  Because I want to do it better.  For the same reason I like running - I want to improve my personal best.

Again, yes, I realize this is insane.  I had pretty much the perfect birth, based on what we wanted.  No drugs, no IVs, no forceps, no vacuum, no emergencies, no problems.  But I did have to have an episiotomy and, oh, ya there is the fact that I pretty much begged to die for about 5 hours.

Some of the things I had hope to do during labor to make things easier on my body, but that we didn't do:

a) warm bath.  We tried this.  But funny thing - we had NO HOT WATER at our house that night.  I was beyond miffed.  And a woman in active labor who is beyond miffed is not a pretty sight.

b) a birthing ball.  For some reason, I forgot all about this.  Which is weird, because I even considered purchasing one until my doula assured me she had never had a problem using the ONE they have on the floor in the hospital.  But I don't remember even asking.  I'm an idiot.

c) squatting.  Every time my head was vertical, I felt like I would faint.  I'm sure that if I had just sucked it up and told someone that instead of mumbling "please just kill me.  I want to die." that they would have helped to physically support me in a squat.  But, I didn't, so no squatting happened.  I think the squatting may have helped get M out faster, and may have helped avoid the episiotomy.

Anyway, so I have a handful of regrets about my birthing experience, and they aren't going away.  And since I can't go back and do it better, the only option is to do it again.  Basically to improve my time.  I know I know, I know.  Just, shhhhh.

Unintentional innuendo

Dinner last night was fabulous and I am so glad that I hauled my ass off the sofa to go. Almost even better was the little shopping extravaganza prior to dinner wherein I spent far too much money on new handbags and sweaters, but that is all under wraps until SB finds the carefully hidden merchandise....

When all the girls get together, there are always stories that make us laugh until things shoot our our noses. One of the stories is a staple, and gets told pretty much every time we get together because there is someone who has missed the last few get togethers and hasn't heard the story.

The staple story is one that N heard from a friend. He was out to dinner with a francophone woman he worked with and some people they would want to impress (I forget if they were bosses or business acquaintances, but you get the picture). At the end of the meal, when the waiter came around to pick up the plates the woman was in the middle of a conversation and flippantly said to the waiter, "oh, yes, I would like to take it doggy style." Now none of us in our circle of friends is able to say "I'd like a doggy bag" - we all say "can I have this to go?" because we are so terrified that it might slip out "I'll take it doggy style."

During the dinner last night, our friend T was the one who had never heard this story. And then it turns out she had a funny story of her own that involved a bit of a language barrier. She went to a dinner party at her fiance's friend's home. The friend's wife is very french, but T and her man are pretty anglo so they spent the evening speaking in english. They had a lovely wine and cheese before dinner, and were all getting along very well - the food was beautiful too. Then as the wife was clearing the cheese plates and things, she said happily, "I hope you saved room - now it's time for the intercourse!" T and her fiance were cracking up laughing and it got explained that it was the "main course" not the "intercourse". It was a good thing that they were right about the mistake and T hadn't ended up at that kind of party.

Reason number 377...

...that I should never have nor be around small children: I think they are real-live adult humans, when really they are not.

This summer friends of SB's moved into a house with a pool, so they had a pool party/bbq to cap off the nice weather. They have a little girl who is probably not quite two years old...I don't know, I suck at guessing ages.

Anyway, I was playing with their dog, as I do, and the little kid was standing near us. She had a Dora doll (even I know who Dora is) and the little monkey who is friends with Dora, who was wearing a T-shirt that said "Boots".

Me: What's that girl's name? (pointing at the Dora doll; I said this in french because the kid is french)
Her: That's Dora (holding up the Dora doll. Good start)
Me: And this one?
Her: That's Babouche.
Me: No, no, I think his name is Boots.
Her: No, Babouche.
Me: No, it's Boots (frustrated already) see, it says so on his shirt (point to his name, making no sudden movements because she's starting to look upset).
Her: No, Babouche.
Me: I really think his name is Boots (backing away because her little miniature brow is furrowed and I really don't want her to scream at me.)
Her: NO, BABOUCHE (shaking toy vehemently in one hand and pointing wildly with the other)
Me: Ya, sure, okay, whatever (backing up slowly, then running away)

Before we left I asked her mom why she calls the toy Babouche when his name is Boots (it says so on his shirt).

"Oh, on the French show it's Babouche."

Hmm.

That sh*t is funny!

Have you seen this? It's so wrong. And yet, also, so funny. Just the way I like it.

What about this? That's just funny. What can be wrong about that?

So, as you can see, I haven't been up to too much. I am a little scared to undertake any major tasks, projects or responsibilities because I'm terrified of what will go wrong when I do so. So I'm just keepin' on keepin' on, as they say.

We did some dog sitting this weekend, which we don't generally do, but I was feeling generous and the price was right. Our little houseguest, Chester, was very sweet, and very quiet, so basically the opposite of Charlie. The only thing that was slightly annoying was his obsession with our cat, and Simon's subsequent hatred of Chester. I've never heard Simon growl before, but there he went growling. Growling from the top of the kitchen cabinets. Growling on the sofa table. Growling from the top of SB's head at 3:30 in the morning.

TV season is wrapping up, which is sad, but also good because we all know I am a slave to TV, so maybe now I will actually leave the house once in a while. There are tons of fun things to do in our new neighborhood, and I can't wait to participate. There's a dog park right up the street, where our dogs can go and not interact with other dogs, but waddle from person to person to see if anyone has any spare cheese. And, how convenient is it that there is a fantastic fromagerie right down the street?

The funniest/saddest thing I've seen in a while

The other day on the group walk I brought my two mutts with me, and we met up with the other group walker and all walked together. We were having a lovely time, and everyone was happy, until we noticed that one of the doggies run towards something in the woods. Maria screamed "Aaaah - he's got a squirrel!!!!"

At first I thought it was a dead squirrel, which happens all too often, but then the dog dropped the squirrel, and it was moving around and stuff. Yuck. A bunch of dogs had converged on the area, so I ran in to get them away and shoo them back onto the trail. Then my genius dog, Charlie, tried to sniff Dying Squirrel, got a little too close, and the Dying Squirrel latched onto his lip.

Picture, if you will, a high-strung Basset Hound (I know, that in itself is difficult to imagine) flopping his head back and forth with the most worried look I've ever seen, trying to shake free Dying Squirrel who has a death grip on his face. After a few seconds Dying Squirrel finally let loose, and I was able to grab Charlie by the collar and drag him away.

I feel bad that we had to leave the squirrel there suffering (I'm pretty sure it was already sick or dying to be on the ground in the first place for the first dog to catch hold of it), but I thought it was more important to get the dogs out of there so it didn't die while being ripped to pieces. However, as sad as that is, I would pay anyone at least $100 for a video of that 10 seconds Charlie had the squirrel stuck to his face.

More fun with Christmas commercials

Has anyone seen the new World Vision Canada Christmas ad? They now have a catalogue of items that you can purchase on behalf of your gift receiver. So you give this stuff to people in Africa in the name of someone here, in your family, etc. It's a really great idea, but I'm so not into how they advertise it. I've searched YouTube and can't find it on there, which was very disappointing.

It starts with a bunch of kids singing a version of the 12 Days of Christmas, talking about getting three hens for Christmas, two milking goats, and 1 dairy cow. Then the pretty blonde lady talks for a few seconds about giving the gift that keeps on giving, allowing families to thrive, etc, etc. She says something like "how thrilled will grandma be to see you gave a chicken in her name?"

I think they have taken a bit of a light-hearted approach to famine and drought this time, a take off from their "So This is Christmas" ad which makes me cry everytime I see it, almost as much as those WSPA commercials about the dancing bears do. I'm not sure they're tugging at enough heart-strings to get much out of it, which is sad, because like I said, I think it's actually a really great idea.

But, it has left me with a new holiday motto. I swear to you I am not making this up, it is actually in the commercial, but it is officially the response I will give to anyone who asks my advice about buying gifts for people. I will say:

"Why not give a goat?"

I will never understand the canine digestive system

This morning I fed my dog a frozen strawberry. She was totally into it, because she loves fruit, and she also loves to crunch on ice, so this was like heaven for her. She crunched away for about 3.7 seconds.

Then she walked into the hallway and barfed all over the place. Not just frozen strawberry, but also last night's Greenie.

This she pukes up, but horse shit she has no problem keeping down.

For the Record

I just saw the new Hallmark Holiday Item commercial, and I just have a few thoughts about it.

First of all, I hate all of their Holiday Items - the Valentine kiss-kiss bears, some weird thing they had last Christmas, all of them. They are just a scam to get you to buy more cards and waste more paper. Not that I'm a super environmentalist, maybe I'm just a grinch, or scrooge, or whatever.

This year, the item appears to be a little snow scene, I think it was penguins skating, and it's soft and plush and when you squeeze some part of it, it plays a song. How is this kind of item useful? Not at all, that's how. Unless you have a three year old. Or dogs who like to rip the stuffing out of things.

Anyway, in the commercial, they are sitting in an airport, I think it's supposed to be Christmas Eve, and all the flights are delayed. Everyone is upset, depressed, etc (surprisingly no one is rushing the boarding gates demanding the attendants turn off the snow, like on the show Airline). Then Thoughtful Mommy pulls out the Hallmark Holiday Item and gives it to little Timmy, who squeezes it and it starts playing its joyful holiday song. Everyone gathers 'round and they all begin to feel warm and fuzzy, and they sing carols and rejoice. So much rejoicing is going on that they don't even hear that their flights are ready to board.

Baloney, I say. For the record, if I was ever in an airport, even if my flight was on time - hell, let's just say if I was in any public place ever - and someone started playing that tinny Christmas carol music that comes out of those toys, over and over again, I would take it. I would take it away and burn it. If I happened to be in the airport, where lighters and matches are prohibited, I would find some other way of destroying it. And then I would hit Thoughtful Mommy on the head, tell her to smarten up, and tell Timmy his mom is an idiot. And then the people would rejoice.

It's official

So, I'm officially an idiot. Or I have extremely bad luck.

The other day our living room smelled like cat shit. We keep the cat pooper in the living room, behind a chair, where the dogs can't get to it (I know, gross, but they like to have a tasty snack sometimes), so sometimes right after Simon goes I smell poo for a few minutes. But this smell I had been smelling for a few days, and always from my spot on the sofa, about ten feet from the pooper area.

I had a momentary burst of cleaning energy, and I swept the whole living room floor, pulled out the sofa and swept there, then changed the pooper, then wanted to wash all the sofa accoutrement; the pillowshams, the duvet I cuddle with, etc. So, I started the wash, dumped a bunch of stuff in, and grabbed the duvet and was stuffing it in, when I heard "plop".

My cordless phone was in the folds of the duvet, and even though I had avoided stuffing it through the wash, it flew out of the duvet and into the toilet. I fried my cordless phone by dropping it in the toilet. Wow.

I just need a little more "me" time

While watching TV the other night, a commercial came on for some kind of learning game for kids. It showed the mom with the kid sitting on her knee playing this game on the TV. It made me think about how terrible I would be as a parent. I don't think I would like to play kid games. I would need a child who likes to do crossword puzzles, or who could play quietly while I did mine. And the child must knit. I would most likely have a hard time concentrating while playing normal kid games. My kid would probably grow up thinking C is for dog just because I wasn't paying attention.

Newfoundland Traffic Report

I am a TV addict, and am also fortunate enough to have satellite TV. Because we have satellite, I have feeds of CTV from all across the country.

Every day, around this time of day, NTV (Newfoundland's television station) airs the Newfoundland traffic report. I'm not even joking. They show live feed from like 5 or 6 locations and comment on the traffic flow. I have never seen more than three cars on the screen. And the guy is just like "highway blah blah blah out of Booneyville - all clear there" in such a serious way, and you're watching like "Dude, there is never traffic there - ever!" It would make more sense if they did a regular weather report at this time, and if there are any traffic issues, mention them then. Maybe it's all one big joke they are making about themselves. I don't know.

My offer and my iPod did not come yesterday, much to my chagrin, but they did both come today. My offer had less information in it than I expected - just the offer itself and some insurance forms. Can't wait for Monday to find out more about the job - up until now I've felt really confident, but I'm starting to doubt myself cause I have so much time on my hands, thus time to think about everything that could go wrong. Also, I spoke with my New Boss today and she was like "we have all kinds of stuff going on next week, so it will be a pretty crazy time for you to be coming on board." Yikes.

My iPod is back, but it is not my iPod. It is a BRAND NEW one!!! Yay! I hope this one doesn't have the same issues. If it does have the same issues, I hope they happen in the next couple of months cause my warrantee runs out in March. We are going to go tonight and buy a case for it, or a skin, or something to keep the screen from getting scratched.

If you are travelling to Gander today, be advised that there are two cars travelling there, but if you're going to Goose Bay, it's all clear.

A Nice Girl Gets a Nice Hairdo, and Then.....

Once upon a time, about two years ago, a nice girl decided to treat herself to a nice hair makeover. A super-fancy, super-expensive cut, color, and highlighting (ash blonde on chocolate brown). This girl was extremely happy with the results, and felt like a movie star flouncing that hair around. Her hair was not only blonder than ever (usually at-home colors turned her brown hair a weird copper color), but the texture had changed in such a way that it held a curl for more than five minutes with less than two bottles of hairspray. It was a happy time in this girl's life, full of non-ponytail days and compliments galore.

Then the hair grew out. As it grew out, the blonde highlights started to look a little weird. So, this girl put a semi-permanent, light brown color on top of it all to smooth things out a bit. This new hair looked okay, but was not as fun and excited as the super hairdo was. People talked less about the hair than they used to. The girl started to think about heading back to the salon for some new highlights. But, alas, the budget would not allow. So, this girl did the only thing she could think.

She dropped 25 bucks on an at-home highlighting kit.

In defense of this product, it was August. It was at least 40 degrees in the apartment. This girl was tired, and impatient, and probably didn't give her highlight application the time and attention it deserved because her arms were tired, and sweat was dripping everywhere, and the dog was growling at the mailman. The brush on the tiny applicator wand bent under desperate strokes. The box said to lay the highlights on top of the normal hair, that the color would not bleed. Maybe it was the sweat, or the heat, or the careless application, but that color did bleed. And the color, of course, was not the color on the box. It was fluorescent. And the splotches, oh the splotches.

After much internet researching, this girl discovered that if you have had professional highlighting or bleaching of any kind done, it is usually a good idea to have the color neutralized or something like that before attempting an at-home color. Huh.

The girl also discovered that to fix any major screw-ups like this one, it is best to return to a stylist. However, this girl could not afford this option, especially after spending 25 bucks on the color in the first place. So, the girl put a semi-permanent ultra-dark color on top, and it turned out not so bad.

Now, today this girl took a trek to Pharmaprix because this girl's cat threw her deodorant off the dresser and it crumbled into tiny non-usable pieces. On-sale in this pharmacy was the same at-home highlighting kit. Like $8 off. So, this girl decided to give it another chance, now that the weather is nice and cool, and her hair has not been bleached for over two years.

We will see how it turns out, but I have a feeling that if her hair turns out splotchy or neon colored or both, this girl will be sending someone at L'Oreal a strongly worded letter.
